Le Corbusier regarded traditional furnishings, with their structures hidden beneath wads of padding and upholstery, as relics of the past. Partnering with Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier stripped away all excess to create the sleek, elemental LC1 Chair (1928). The LC Series was originally designed for indoor use, but after a visit to Villa Savoye, where some of the pieces were being used on the outdoor terrace, Cassina was inspired to create outdoor-safe models. The manufacturer spent three years working closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to develop a product that was within the Foundations parameters: to be the same or better quality than indoor. Cassina opted for better, using hand-polished AISI 304 stainless steel with silver welding, as opposed to chrome, to construct the frames, a material with extreme resistance to corrosion that is actually more authentic to the product; chrome was not used until the 1970s/1980s. The silver welding will patina over time and develop a halo. The back of the chair is attached to the frame by a rod that allows the angle of tilt to change – as the user shifts from one sitting position to another, the chair back moves, offering continuous support. The waterproof, UV-resistant Sunbrella® fabric is held in place by stainless steel springs that provide a comfortable give. Each piece is signed, numbered and, as a product of Cassina's Masters Collection, manufactured by Cassina under exclusive worldwide license from the Le Corbusier Foundation. Made in Italy.
