Charles and Ray Eames had ideas about making a better world, one in which things were designed to bring greater pleasure to our lives. Their iconic Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (1956) began with a desire to create a chair with the warm, receptive look of a well-used first basemans mitt. The result embodies what it really means to lounge. In continuous production since its introduction, this set is widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century. Combining soft, inviting leather with the sleek form of molded wood, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is the culmination of the Eameses efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology they pioneered in the 40s. Even today, each piece is assembled by hand to ensure the highest level of quality and craftsmanship, and youll be pleased to discover the set gets even better with use and age. Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong, the latter of which has been continually proven in cafés and restaurants all over the globe. Swiss architect Le Corbusier used the Era Chair in his buildings, stating, This chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility. Other fans of this iconic form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured this chair in their paintings. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic. Design Within Reach Bertoia Bird Ottoman with Full Cover in Classic Boucl Design Within Reach Bertoia Bird Ottoman with Full Cover in Classic Boucl

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Bird Ottoman produced by Knoll. Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted footstool that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg Chair and Footstool (1958). With this collection, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Impossibly thin Danish oiled oak combines with handwoven cane and luxurious aniline leather in the Colonial Chair and Footstool (1949) – Ole Wanschers most famous and enduring design. Defying gravity through masterful construction, with a compelling material contrast, its name honors the Danish designers fascination with English furnishings from the 1700s. A slightly more conservative strand of Danish modern than we see from masters like Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, Wanschers work reflects his scholarly nature: He served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture (his alma mater) from 1955 to 1973. Designed in 1949, the Colonial wasnt put into production until the mid-1950s, when Wanscher stumbled on a collaboration with PJ Furniture through Mobilia magazine editor, Gunnar Bratvold. (Carl Hansen & Son acquired the right to produce the Colonial Chair and Footstool in 2012.) Wanscher gained a good deal of notoriety in Denmark in the 50s and 60s. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken declared, Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts.
