The Eames® Aluminum Group Collection (1958) began as a special project for Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, who needed seating for a home they were designing for industrialist J. Irwin Miller in Columbus, Indiana. The request was for leisure chairs light enough to move from indoors to out and strong enough to withstand the elements. At the time, the Eameses were exploring ways to use aluminum, which had been strengthened, refined and made more affordable since WWII. They constructed a lightweight die-cast frame for the project, then wrapped it in a sling – a sitting pocket that subtly conforms to the bodys shape. The result was a completely new type of seat and a departure from the idea of a chair as solid shell. While the original concept was for outdoor seating, the Eameses quickly recognized its possibilities for indoor use. This collection has been in continuous production by Herman Miller since 1958. DWR Exclusive Owner of more than 400 patents, self-taught inventor Poul Cadovius constantly sought smarter solutions for everything from furniture to bus shelters to sailboats. In the mid-1940s, he devised an ingenious wall-mounted shelving system to save floor space: the Royal System (1948). After the systems introduction, Cadovius three-employee firm soon became the largest furniture manufacturer in Denmark, exporting to countries worldwide. In 2010, Cadovius gave the rights to produce the design to Danish company dk3. A year later, he died at the age of 99, but the project continued under the watchful eye of his widow, Evy, who made sure it stayed true to her husbands high standards. The most successful furniture collection in Denmark for three decades, the Royal System is back in production and available only at DWR. Use it in entryways, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms – wherever you want to lift space-stealing furniture off the floor and have more room for living. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Swag Leg Desk Design Within Reach NelsonTM Swag Leg Desk

The Swag Leg Collection (1958), originally called Swaged-Leg, began when George Nelson asked Charles Pollock, Wouldnt it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture? In pursuing this idea, the designers had to figure out how to make machine-formed metal legs that would be identical to one another for ease of production and readily removable for shipping. The solution turned out to be swaging, a manufacturing process that uses pressure to curve and taper a metal tube, which Pollock had experimented with when studying at Pratt. The legs became the foundation for a collection that includes an armchair, worktable and dining table. When the desk was reintroduced in 2007, a grommet was added to the back right corner for cable management. The brightly colored dividers create storage cubbies, and the center cubby fits most laptops. Removable organizer trays in the drawers keep stationery organized, and adjustable glides ensure a level work surface. Ships flat; simple assembly required. Originally designed for the Hudson Hotel in New York City, the Hudson Collection (2000) is Philippe Starcks update of the 1006 Navy® Chair, designed by Emeco in 1944. Hudson is made using the same 77-step process that Emeco perfected 70 years ago to satisfy the militarys need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for submarines. The companys proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a chair so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Working with Emeco has allowed me to use a recycled material and transform it into something that never needs to be discarded – a tireless and unbreakable chair to enjoy for a lifetime, says Starck. It is a chair you never own, you just use it for a while until it is the next persons turn. The seat of the Hudson Task Chair swivels and tilts, and the pneumatic lift provides instant height adjustment. Hudson is included in the design collection at MoMA and received the 2000 Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum. Hudson chairs and stools come with a lifetime guarantee. Alan Heller knows design innovation – through his company Heller, he has collaborated with the likes of Frank Gehry, Massimo Vignelli and Mario Bellini to create some of the most recognizable examples of classic plastic seating and accessories. With his patented ErgoErgo (2009), Heller figured out how to improve upon the near-ubiquitous exercise ball. For years, exercise balls have been used as seating for those with back pain, pregnant women or anyone who could benefit from a straight spine and stronger core (aka, pretty much everyone). Heller has taken this sporty design and improved it for the modern-minded: More stable than a ball, ErgoErgo allows for greater fluidity of motion, doesnt deflate or roll away and doesnt collect detritus like hair or dust off the floor. Plus, it just looks better. Compact, lightweight and portable, ErgoErgo can be found in homes, offices, conference rooms, classrooms, lobbies and restaurants. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Made by ErgoErgo, Inc. Backed by a two year manufacturers warranty. Made in U.S.A. ErgoErgo lets you rock gently in any direction to help build strength and flexibility, stimulate circulation, send oxygen to the brain and improve concentration. The blow-molding process used to create ErgoErgo leaves behind a seam with a very slight variation in texture, which is most pronounced on the seating surface. Materials: Recyclable polyethylene. Niels Diffrients Freedom Chair (1999) was a breakthrough in ergonomic task seating. With a height-adjustable headrest, the headrest version offers customized support for the head, allowing for proper eye-level positioning when working long hours at a computer station. The Freedom Chair is designed to fit almost all body types. The seat depth is adjustable to properly support the seat and thighs, while the adjustable back support helps keep the lumbar region of the body in line. Often, ergonomic chairs are likely to be improperly positioned, resulting in the creation of more problems than they solve. The Freedom Chair is simpler than other chairs, eliminating many manual adjustments and creating instead a system of internal mechanisms that respond to the users needs. A unique counterbalancing tilt mechanism self-adjusts according to the users weight and movement, thus eliminating the need for manual fixes. In addition, the chair and seatback can be easily raised or lowered, and the seat itself moves forward or back. Any adjustments can be easily made while the user is seated for accurate positioning. Because of a natural lift-and-release action, the armrests are effortlessly repositioned in tandem, depending on the task at hand. The seat cushion provides excellent shock absorption and weight distribution for unmatched comfort. Backed by a 15-year manufacturers warranty. Made in U.S.A. For big shots who leave small footprints, Freedom is 62% recycled, 90% recyclable and 100% comfortable. Hans Wegners Ladderback Chair (1966), with its fine joinery and exquisite form, demonstrates the Danish modern innovators roots as a cabinetmaker. Shaker-inspired, it features visible joints between the foreleg and the armrest, which help make the chair extremely strong. The hand-woven paper cord seat provides a compelling material contrast to the solid oak frame on this intuitively ergonomic chair that can be used for reading or as a statement piece. A fine example of Wegners trademark organic functionalism, the Ladderback combines the warmth of natural wood with the clean, minimal lines of midcentury modernism. Designer Leon Ransmeier established his own New York-based studio, Ransmeier Inc., in 2010, and his work has since been featured by the likes of MoMA and Cooper Hewitt. To Ransmeier, fulfilling design is all about breaking down a single challenge into a series of smaller tasks that can be considered and enjoyed at length. If one cannot enjoy the details, he reasons, one will never find satisfaction in the whole. Inspired by efficient aeronautical forms, he set out to eliminate the superfluous when creating his AGL Table Group (2012). AGL – an apropos abbreviation of above ground level – is a lightweight yet strong piece that serves equally well in a variety of residential and commercial spaces. Designed to be warm and welcoming, it features a sleek top with a rich finish and carefully beveled edge thats naturally conducive to resting ones arms. Theres something very inviting and very hospitable about the softness of the tables edge, says Ransmeier. The edge shape, he further explains, is about making people comfortable, physically and socially. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair with Pneumatic Lift Design Within Reach Eames Aluminum Group Management Chair with Pneumatic Lift

Constructed of 61% recycled materials, its also 88% recyclable at the end of its useful life. Backed by a 12-year manufacturers warranty. This is an authentic Eames chair by Herman Miller. Dan Grabowski grew up getting a practical education in backyard industrial design. When my dad needed to create or repair something, he would design a solution, and then we would go off together and build it, he recalls. In college, he studied the work of sculptor Harry Bertoia, and thats when it clicked for me – the connection between sculpture and industrial design. Applying that connection, Grabowski strives to solve problems in smart ways using simple, uncluttered lines. His EverywhereTM Flip-Top Table (2011) is smart in every way, its strength, versatility and trim profile making it a great option for conference rooms, offices or home craft rooms. George Nelson was an architect, designer, writer and teacher, as well as Herman Miller’s design director from 1945 to 1972. The X-Leg Desk (1950) is a versatile table that tackles dining, entertaining and working with equal effectiveness. Its large rectangular top provides ample usable space, with sturdy tubular steel legs that offer great support. Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Side Chair with Casters Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Side Chair with Casters

The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Side Chair with Casters (1957) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men – for Saarinen, most notably in his WombTM, TulipTM and Executive Chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged, with a molded shell that flexes slightly with the sitter and a contoured plywood seat. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of Saarinen's Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified® for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Backed by a five-year manufacturers warranty. Made in U.S.A. The Executive Side Chair with Casters is supported by a five-point, pneumatic height-adjustable swiveling base with twin-wheel casters for use on carpet. Design Within Reach Royal System Shelving Unit A with Desk Shelf Design Within Reach Royal System Shelving Unit A with Desk Shelf

All pieces are finely crafted using time-honored techniques perfected over centuries by Danish woodworkers. Assembly not included with White Glove delivery service. Made in Denmark.
