Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong – the latter of which has been continually proven in cafes and restaurants all over the globe. Made in the Czech Republic by a company that has been in continuous operation for more than a century. This contract-quality chair is suitable for commercial and residential use. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. The inspiration for the Cabrio Lounge Chair (2009) came from a desire to strip away excess and greatly simplify the overly complicated Adirondack chairs that are found on the market today. Designers Greg Benson and Jeff Tally point out how the Cabrios single-plank back and wide arms are a nod toward the Westport chair, which was the inspiration for and predates the Adirondack. With a seat thats low to the ground and generously angled, Cabrio is built for casual lounging and enjoying the outdoors. This chair is made of recycled plastic reclaimed from post-consumer goods like milk jugs, which can be recycled again if necessary. Since Loll was founded in 2006, its use of recycled materials has kept millions of milk jugs out of landfills. The fade-resistant, waterproof, maintenance-free Cabrio Lounge Chair is made to last for years. DWR Exclusive As a theater and dance student at the University of West Virginia, Ted Boerner developed an intuitive sense of the body and the space it occupies – an awareness that now lends his furniture its genial angles and careful proportions. He attended NYU for grad school and began his career as a set and costume designer. Propping scenes and imagining the things that characters would surround themselves with made me think about how important furniture is to people, says the designer. Modern sofas often claim minimalist appeal, but few can also tout the comfort of the Theatre Collection (2001). Designed to accommodate the human body with studied proportions and simple geometry, Theatres comfort stems from its form rather than excessive layers of stuffing. Bassams Tractor Stool (2000/2001) is carved out of a massive block of sustainably sourced ash or walnut, the quality of which is in the top 10% of premium woods. Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover Design Within Reach Bertoia AsymmetricTM Chaise with Full Cover

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise produced by Knoll. The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinen’s furniture can also be found in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, when Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found the right candidate for the task. The Womb Chair (1946) has an enveloping form that continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of midcentury organic modernism. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Reinforced fiberglass shell; plywood platform; polyester fiber padding with foam core; steel rod frame with black powder-coated or polished chrome finish; stainless steel and nylon glides; fabric or leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad Design Within Reach Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair with Seat Pad

This is the authentic Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Chair made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. In honor of Bertoias 100th birthday, Knoll has introduced a version of this classic finished in 18-karat plated gold. Black and White frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. Chrome and Gold frames are not for outdoor use. Vinyl seat pad can be used outdoors and is secured to chair with metal snaps. Bouclé full cover is not for outdoor use. DWR Exclusive Upon receiving a masters degree in industrial design from Pratt in 2005, Brad Ascalon was recognized by Wallpaper* magazine as one of the Ten Most Wanted emerging designers in the world. He grew up immersed in art and design, with his grandfather and father both being sculptors. In creating this collection, he was inspired by Atlas, the Greek mythological character condemned for eternity to carry the heavens on his shoulders. Translating this into a physical object, Ascalon was intrigued by the challenge of making an elegant frame that could carry the weight of solid stone or thick glass. The Atlas Table (2012), like Atlas himself, exemplifies strength and endurance. Top made in China; base made in U.S.A. DWR Exclusive British industrial designer Terence Woodgate is a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI), the highest honor awarded to designers in the U.K. Hes known for his obsessive attention to detail, which is beautifully illustrated in his Unison Table (2011). Visually simple, this two-tier table is actually quite complex in its design. In place of fasteners and external hardware, Unison uses a lower shelf as the structural component to hold the legs firmly in position. Its glass tabletop rests on neoprene pads, and Woodgate had to be sure to get the weight just right to make the pads grip sufficiently. Visible through the tabletop is the lower shelf with exquisitely cut half-sawn wood veneer. Made in Slovenia. Materials: Tempered glass top; MDF shelf with walnut or ash veneer; solid walnut or ash legs. Measurements:H 13.75" W 39" D 39"

Design Within Reach Milo Baughman Recliner 74 Design Within Reach Milo Baughman Recliner 74

DWR Exclusive Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interesting, said designer Milo Baughman, but too often belongs only in museums. A firm believer that good design can have a positive influence in our lives, Baughman knew how to design sophisticated, sexy chairs – even when it came to a Recliner (1966). Recognized as one of the originators of the California modern movement, Baughman began his career as a custom furniture designer, and in 1953 he joined forces with Thayer Coggin, the founder of the North Carolina company that is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughmans work. For five decades, Baughman designed clean, sophisticated and easy-to-live-with furniture, and we worked closely with Thayer Coggin to bring this Recliner back into production. Baughmans work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. In 1987, he was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame. Made in U.S.A. Opens with a slight seated push. Enjoy three stages of comfort: from upright to feet up to full recline.
