Design Within Reach Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat
In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability easily withstanding decades of frequent use and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What's amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it's woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels' son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand. Materials Teak or walnut frame; woven paper seat in natural.
Design Within Reach Barcelona Couch
Ludwig Mies van der Rohes Barcelona Couch (1930) was added to his Barcelona Collection in the year following the introduction of the Chair and Stool. Still produced to his original specifications, the couch gained widespread popularity in 1953, when architect Philip Johnson selected it for his New York apartment. The cushions – welting and buttons included – come from a single Spinneybeck Volo cowhide and are supported by cowhide belting straps. To create the deep, precise tufting, individual panels of leather are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted. The frame is made from African mahogany sapele hardwood, with stainless steel legs. The bolster cushion is crafted from coordinating leather and secured to the couch with straps and locking snaps. The Barcelona Couch is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. Materials: African sapele hardwood frame with protective clear lacquer finish; cowhide leather straps; rubber webbing; polished stainless steel legs; Dacron®-wrapped high-resiliency urethane foam and fiberfill cushions; Spinneybeck® Volo semi-aniline leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Eames Two-Seat Sofa
The Eameses designed their Eames Sofa (1967) to complement their Soft Pad Collection, showing off a harmonious blend of wood, leather and polished aluminum. The frame and back panels are constructed of rich solid wood and hand-finished with gunstock oil. Legs and arm supports are made of die-cast aluminum polished to a bright finish. And plush foam cushions come upholstered in leather, with undersides covered in nylon for good ventilation, supported by resilient webbing for added comfort. The Eames Sofa was the last piece of furniture produced by the Eames Office and was completed after Charles Eames died in 1978. Its been in continuous production since 1984. Design Within Reach Drum Side Table
Furniture that is too obviously designed, said Milo Baughman, is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums. While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughmans cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. It includes leveling floor glides to compensate for uneven surfaces. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel with brushed bronze finish. Measurements:H 24" Diameter 22"
Design Within Reach Morrison Dresser
DWR Exclusive Based in Brooklyn, Egg Collective was founded in 2011 by designers Stephanie Beamer, Crystal Ellis and Hillary Petrie. The trio produces furniture, lighting and accessories that evoke their own personal histories and draw upon memories of families and friends. Recent honors include the Best New Designer award at the 2012 International Contemporary Furniture Fair and inclusion on Forbes magazines 2014 30 Under 30 list. They were also commissioned to design a seating area for the New York City Ballets David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Their Morrison Collection (2012/2014) was originally created for longtime friend Morrison Mullen, who needed a custom cabinet for her small apartment. To overcome space constraints, the designers knew the piece would need to serve equally well as a storage unit, serving station and media console. What they created was a multifunctional modern take on the traditional sideboard, featuring a stain-resistant stone top, soft-closing hardware, turned legs, sleek lines and delicately scalloped profile. The original design has since grown into a collection of flexible storage equally at home in the entryway, living room, dining room and bedroom. Made in Canada. Materials: White Carrara or Crema Marfil marble top; flat-sawn cathedral grain walnut veneer or quarter-sawn wild grain ebonized oak veneer over MDF case and frame; solid walnut or ebonized oak legs; solid brass knobs and leveling feet; soft-closing hardware. Measurements:H 32" W 74" D 20"
Design Within Reach Ladderback Chair
Hans Wegners Ladderback Chair (1966), with its fine joinery and exquisite form, demonstrates the Danish modern innovators roots as a cabinetmaker. Shaker-inspired, it features visible joints between the foreleg and the armrest, which help make the chair extremely strong. The hand-woven paper cord seat provides a compelling material contrast to the solid oak frame on this intuitively ergonomic chair that can be used for reading or as a statement piece. A fine example of Wegners trademark organic functionalism, the Ladderback combines the warmth of natural wood with the clean, minimal lines of midcentury modernism. One of Wegners more than 500 chair creations, it has a timeless shape that hasnt aged a bit since its conception in 1966. Made in Denmark. Materials: Solid Danish oak wood; woven paper cord. Measurements:H 31.5" W 25.25" D 26" Seat H 15.5" Arm H 24.5"
Design Within Reach Cage Side Table
DWR Exclusive Educated throughout Europe, Gordon Guillaumier earned his bachelors and masters degrees in industrial design from Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and the Domus Academy, respectively. From there, Guillaumier apprenticed with Baleri Associati before starting a collaboration with architect and designer Rodolfo Dordoni. In 2002, he opened his own design studio in Milan, specializing in product and interior design. His alluring Cage Table Collection (2010), like many of his other works, is marked by its subtly flowing geometry. These tables feature precision-shaped one-piece bent steel bases that transition smoothly into platforms for their laminate tabletops, which are created by infusing numerous layers of paper with thermosetting resin and subjecting them to high pressure and heat. Fashioned to withstand years of heavy use, laminate surfaces boast exceptional resistance to scratching, staining, temperature extremes and sunlight exposure. Theyre also a cinch to clean. Made in Italy. Materials: High-pressure laminate top; painted bent steel frame. Measurements:H 22" Diameter 19.75"
Design Within Reach Era Armchair
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Collection (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the chair back and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. Swiss architect Le Corbusier used the Era Chair in his buildings, stating, “This chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility.” Other fans of this iconic form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured this chair in their paintings. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic at a factory that’s been making chairs for more than a century. Materials: Solid beech wood from FSC-certified sources; beech plywood seat; water-based stain and varnish or lacquer finish; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 30.75" W 21.5" D 22.5" Seat H 18.25" Arm H 27.75"
Design Within Reach Lisboa Armchair
DWR Exclusive Barcelona native Joan Gaspar began his career as a lighting designer, but it wasnt long before he was also working on furniture, interiors and even faucet systems. In 2002, the book Spoon – an overview of contemporary design published by Phaidon Press – listed him as one of the best new industrial designers, and for the last decade he has lectured at the Eina School of Design and Art in Barcelona. Always looking for traditional items that can be improved, Gaspar was inspired by the schools industrial steel chairs, which led to the colorful, fun Lisboa (2009). Lightweight, UV-protected and stackable up to seven high, this chair serves well indoors and out. BIFMA approved and suitable for commercial use. Made in Spain. Materials: Polypropylene; fiberglass. Measurements:H 32.25" W 23.75" D 20.5" Seat H 18.25" Arm H 27.5"
Design Within Reach Helix Side Table
DWR Exclusive Atlanta-based industrial designer Chris Hardy, who made his design debut at Salone del Mobile in 2011, created the sculptural Helix Coffee Table (2012) for DWR. He gave it an odd number of legs and positioned the brass castings to radiate out from the center, resulting in a distinctive asymmetrical form that looks different from every angle. For Helix, I was inspired by the challenge of personalization in the modern world, and the increasing desire that we have to own objects that match our own styles and philosophies – in the way that art does, explains Hardy. Made by hand, the cast brass base has a natural finish thats soft and not highly polished; minor pitting and irregularities in the brass are typical of the casting process and are not defects. Thick and durable, the annealed glass tabletop is slowly cooled in a kiln to relieve internal stresses after its formed. Leveling glides adjust for uneven floors. Simple assembly required; no tools necessary. Base made in India; tabletop made in U.S.A. Materials: Cast brass; solid walnut; glass. Measurements:H 20" Diameter 20"
Design Within Reach Petal Dining Table
A graduate of the Chicago Institute of Design, aka The New Bauhaus founded by Moholy-Nagy, Richard Schultz joined the team at Knoll in 1951. In his first year, Schultz worked with Florence Knoll in the interior design office and assisted Harry Bertoia on the development of his wire furniture collection. Schultz designed his indoor/outdoor Petal Table (1960) to accompany Bertoias wire chairs, leading to the launch of his first product for Knoll and one of the collections for which he is most known. Inspired by the sight of a Queen Annes Lace flower growing near his home, he designed the tabletop to have eight petals. He then mounted them on a cast aluminum spider that keeps each petal independent and allows the material to expand and contract with the weather. The Petal Table is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic Petal Table by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Architect Philip Johnson was a fan of this collection. He used Petal Tables in his yard – and they remain as he left them, at the Glass House today. Materials: Vertical grain teak with natural finish or machined high-density polyurethane white tabletop; powder-coated cast aluminum spider and base; powder-coated steel stem; nylon floor glides. Measurements:H 28" Diameter 42"
Design Within Reach Krusin Coffee Table
After earning a degree in furniture design from Leeds Metropolitan University in England, Marc Krusin moved to Milan to launch his career. He cofounded the design group Codice 31 and has collaborated with Piero Lissoni, Kartell, Flos and Knoll. In 2008, the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design included Krusin in Europe 40 under 40, an annual list of the most promising and emerging design talent in Europe. Seeing a need for simple and sophisticated guest seating and occasional tables, he created his Krusin Coffee Table (2011) with glass or marble top. The strong geometry of this piece is softened with radius and chamfer details. Suitable for contract use. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Ash, oak, walnut or ebonized oak frame; mortise-and-tenon construction; glass or satin-coated Arabescato marble tabletop. Measurements:H 10" W 36" D 36"
Design Within Reach Pfister Two-Seater Sofa
Charles Pfister was our kind of modernist. There is a movement away from throwaway society, away from disposable possessions, said Pfister. Instead, there is a mounting interest in useful, sculptural, wonderfully constructed objects. His Lounge Collection (1971) is both sculptural and wonderfully constructed, embodying his intent to design items that display opulence without waste. Based in San Francisco, Pfister had a measurable effect on the world of corporate interiors in the late 20th century. Looking at his timeless namesake collection, its easy to see why. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A. The Two-Seaters clean, tailored aesthetic makes it a smart choice for many commercial or residential settings. Short, inset legs give the Two-Seater the appearance of floating slightly over the floor. Heirloom quality: The Pfister Collection features meticulous construction, timeless lines and high-quality leather upholstery. Charles Pfister was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame in 1986. Materials: Hardwood and plywood seat and back; square steel tubing legs; fully upholstered, foam core cushions with polyester wrap; double-needle topstitched Spinneybeck® Volo leather upholstery. Measurements:H 26" W 60.5" D 33" Seat H 16" Arm H 24"
Design Within Reach Moebius Table
DWR Exclusive We discovered the Moebius Table (2006) in Parma, Italy, but with its endless looping base and delicately suspended glass surface, it defies national boundaries. The solid walnut foundation flares and narrows in six arcs, creating a look of poised animation. Each upright is accented by brass hardware and serves as a balance point for the thick glass top. The name was inspired by August Ferdinand Möbius, the German astronomer and mathematician who first published the discovery of the Möbius strip – a two-dimensional surface with only one side. To construct a model of it, take a rectangular piece of paper, give it a half twist and then tape its ends together. The resulting shape has one continuous curve – a bit like the base of Moebius. Reminiscent of the iconic Noguchi® Table, this piece is a classic in its own right, blending rhythmic form with straightforward function. Simple assembly required. Made in Malaysia. Materials: Solid walnut base; brass hardware; 0.75"-thick tempered glass top. Measurements:H 20.5" Diameter 28"
Design Within Reach Deneb Laminate Table

Its legs are configured to increase the stability of the frame and to allow two or more tables to be put together to create a unified ensemble for dining or working. Available in a wide range of sizes that can be mixed and matched, the Deneb Laminate Table is a stunning signature piece that you can build a room or office around. Design Within Reach T.710 Small Side Table
DWR Exclusive A native of Copenhagen, Jens Risom studied in his youth under furniture maker Kaare Klint, alongside the likes of Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen. In 1939, he immigrated to the U.S. and began what would become a towering career, originally marked by his innovative work for Knoll and by the founding of his own studio in 1946, Jens Risom Design. Museum curators have credited him with providing a vital link between Scandinavian and American midcentury design, and his work is included in the collections of MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt, among many others. Risom introduced his T.710 Small Side Table (1950) at a time when he was experimenting with metal. He was fascinated by the negative space the table defines between its base and top and by the illusion of floating the top creates. This table is perfect for tight areas due to its compact size and small footprint. Stacks up to three high. Made in Malaysia. Materials: American walnut top; powder-coated steel base. Measurements:H 21" W 14" D 16"
Design Within Reach NelsonTM Pedestal Stool
Director of design at Herman Miller from 1945 to 1972, George Nelson helped make the company what it is today. He not only recruited influential designers Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi but also created a portfolio of work that helped shape and grow modern design. His Pedestal Stool (1954) fits very well in casual spaces that require easy-to-rearrange seating. It features the clean lines and elegant simplicity typical of Nelson, with an upholstered seat pad that echoes Nelsons iconic Marshmallow Sofa and the same sculptural white aluminum base as Nelson pedestal tables, its siblings. Eco-friendly as it is sightly, its polyester upholstery is devoid of antimony, a known industrial pollutant. Mix and match colors to liven up living spaces, or make a statement with one hue. Self-leveling glides adjust to uneven floor surfaces. This is the authentic Nelson Pedestal Stool produced by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: White powder-coated aluminum base; foam cushion; Gem fabric upholstery (100% antimony-free polyester). Measurements:H 16" Diameter 15"
Design Within Reach Raction Potique Hi-Loop Service Table
Spanish designer Jaime Hayon immersed himself as a teenager in both skateboard culture and graffiti art, which lie at the core of the bold and whimsical forms that he creates today. In 1997, after studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica, a research center in Treviso, Italy, where he soon became the head of design. Hayon struck out on his own in 2003, first devising collections of ceramics and furniture, then delving into interior design. His work is featured in several museums and has received accolades from the likes of Time and Wallpaper . Réaction Poétique commemorates the 50-year anniversary of Le Corbusiers death, inspired by the organic shapes of his architecture and LEsprit Nouveau artwork. I wanted to create useful objects for the modern home such as trays and side tables, but with sculptural elements interplaying forms, light and shadow, says Hayon. These pieces can be used for everything from passing hors doeuvres to displaying knickknacks. Each is carved and finished by hand and includes a card of authenticity. Made in Italy. Materials: Solid ash wood; matte black stain. Measurements:H 22" Diameter 16"
Design Within Reach Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames Stool A
Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and materials, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Charles and Ray Eames received a commission to design the interiors of three lobbies in the new Time & Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In addition to outfitting these spaces, this major project encompassed the development of the comfortably upholstered Lobby Chairs and a group of stools made out of solid walnut. Inspired by an African stool that stood in the living room of the Eames House, the lathe-turned Eames Stools (1960), which were also conceived by Ray to be used as small occasional tables, have distinctive individual profiles. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Materials: Solid walnut; varnish. Measurements:H 2.5" W 2.25" D 2.25"
Design Within Reach RenewTM Sit-to-Stand Desk
Designer and sculptor Brian Alexander has always been fascinated by the way people interact with their environments and the objects around them. By studying peoples behavior, he gets a sense of what they find intuitive, which he then works into his creations. I try to slip people little affirmations through my designs, things they can identify or connect with on a very basic level, he explains. You can see it in their faces, the reactions they have when something flows with them rather than against them. A holder of 20-plus patents for office furniture and accessories, Alexander clearly knows his way around the workplace and what people need to be comfortable and productive in it. His Renew Desk (2013) lets you go from sitting to standing and back again so you can keep moving throughout the workday – vital to improving energy and focus and to lowering health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Its motorized lift operates easily with an intuitive lever: pull up to raise, push down to lower. Beyond adjustability, Renew also sports ample legroom and beveled edges for eliminating bumps and bruises, and concealed screw heads for a sleek finish. Simple assembly required. Backed by a two-year manufacturer's warranty. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Ash veneer, walnut veneer or white laminate over MDF top; electric motor; die-cast aluminum legs; nonslip rubber feet. An innovator of organic functionalism, he designed more than 500 chairs in his lifetime, many of which are heralded as design icons. His CH88 Stacking Chair (1955) is but one of them, fusing warm wood and industrial steel in one unified form. It combines a steam-molded wooden back with upturned ends to provide a natural resting place for your arms and an oval wooden seat on a tubular steel frame. Carl Hansen & Sn launched the CH88 Stacking Chair in 2014 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Wegner’s birth. Stacks up to four high. Made in Denmark. Design Within Reach NelsonTM Swag Leg Desk
The Swag Leg Collection (1958), originally called Swaged-Leg, began when George Nelson asked Charles Pollock, Wouldnt it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture? In pursuing this idea, the designers had to figure out how to make machine-formed metal legs that would be identical to one another for ease of production and readily removable for shipping. The solution turned out to be swaging, a manufacturing process that uses pressure to curve and taper a metal tube, which Pollock had experimented with when studying at Pratt. The legs became the foundation for a collection that includes an armchair, worktable and dining table. When the desk was reintroduced in 2007, a grommet was added to the back right corner for cable management. The brightly colored dividers create storage cubbies, and the center cubby fits most laptops. Removable organizer trays in the drawers keep stationery organized, and adjustable glides ensure a level work surface. Ships flat; simple assembly required. This is the authentic Swag Leg Desk by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Steel legs; solid walnut; walnut veneer; laminate writing surface; particleboard; formed plastic organizer trays; leveling floor glides. Measurements:H 34.5" W 39" D 28.5" Desktop H 29.5"
Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men – for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive Chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter, and the contoured plywood seat is supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Design Within Reach EggTM Chair
Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland. The Egg Chair tilts and swivels. Finely upholstered, the fabric or leather is hand-sewn onto the frame. Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane foam shell; satin-chromed steel column; injection-molded aluminum base; fabric or leather upholstery. Gabriel® Fame® upholstery: 95% wool, 5% polyamide. Maharam Kvadrat® Tonus upholstery: 90% wool, 10% Helanca®. Basel upholstery: 90% new wool, 10% nylon; Sorensen leather piping. Leather upholstery: full-grain leather or cowhide. Design Within Reach Panton Chair
I want to design furniture that grows up out of the floor, said Verner Panton. To turn the furniture into something organic. Which never has four legs. Pushing materials to their limits was a passion of this Danish architect and designer, who always approached design challenges in unconventional ways. His cantilevered stacking chair (1960) was the first single-material and single-form chair to be made, and its been continually improved and updated by Vitra through three decades of development in plastics technology. As striking as a modern sculpture, the Panton Chair is crafted into a single piece of strong, flexible polypropylene thats wonderfully durable and easy to clean. Suitable for residential and commercial use. Made in Italy. Materials: Batch-dyed polypropylene with matte surface. Measurements:H 33" W 19" D 22.75" Seat H 16.5"

Design Within Reach Milo Baughman 1188 Dining Chair
DWR Exclusive The 1188 Chair (1968) was Milo Baughmans favorite chair and the one with which he chose to furnish the home of business partner and friend Thayer Coggin. Given that the Coggin family couldve had any dining chair in the companys inventory, the 1188 is something special indeed. Baughman and Coggin met in 1953 and formed a powerful partnership that lasted for five decades. The North Carolina-based company is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughman furniture to this day. The designers work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. Baughman was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame in 1987. Made in U.S.A. Natural leather is prized for its unique markings. Scars, scrapes and wrinkles are not defects. The bronze finish is created by hand and is not uniform. This is intentional, and the marks of the craftsman are left on the chair to add warmth and character to each piece. Materials: Tubular polished stainless steel frame or tubular steel frame with brushed bronze finish; kiln-dried maple and plywood interior; foam and fiber cushions; fabric or leather upholstery. Design Within Reach Risom Arm Lounge Chair
The Risom Arm Lounge Chair (1943), by Danish designer Jens Risom, is testament to the simplicity and ingenuity that is so often found in timeless modern furniture.
