Design Within Reach Rina Menardi - Large Bowl
Design Within Reach Rina Menardi - Large Bowl

As a ceramist, Rina Menardi has spent 30 years researching and perfecting her techniques and color schemes the result of which can be seen in her pieces. Inspired by nature and her own feelings, this extraordinary designer-craftswoman believes that “an object should not impose itself, but rather suggest visual and tactile sensations able to evoke our deepest emotions.” All handmade, Menardi's bowls and trays (1980) are characterized by simple lines and stunning colors. The red of a sunset, the purple of an autumn leaf, the white of an ocean shell can all be found in her ceramics. She chooses to work in baked clay because it allows her to express herself through gaining possession of some of nature's secrets. “Clay allows me to give a three-dimensional shape to the here-and-now ‘me,'” says the artist. “It is a way of communicating with myself and, therefore, with others.” Made in Italy. Materials Ceramic.

Design Within Reach Granit Salad Plate
Design Within Reach Granit Salad Plate

DWR Exclusive In 1926, the Kispester-Granit factory in Budapest hired Eva Zeisel, who was 20 years old at the time, as a designer. It was only her first job, but the company was so impressed with her initial work that they created a special art department for her. The employees, who normally produced ceramic sinks, all wanted to work with Zeisel as she brought elegant vases, whimsical rhinoceros-shaped ashtrays and beautiful teapots into the product mix. The factory closed her department after just one year, but the experience sparked a brilliant career. Almost 60 years later, Zeisel returned to the factory and designed the Granit Collection (1983). Though widely exhibited, the set – which features her signature fluid, sensuous curves – wasnt put into production until 2009. DWR worked closely with Zeisel to ensure that Granit adheres to her exacting standards. I like the way the very thin, hard edges of the plates change into a soft, inviting bellybutton, she said. All the pieces together make a very nice family. The plates and bowls each feature a dimple in the center, and their matte white finish offers a neutral backdrop for culinary delights. This collection is food, microwave and dishwasher safe. Made in China. Materials: Stoneware. Measurements:H 1.25" Diameter 8.25"

Brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec founded their own design firm in 1999, where they work on everything from architectural projects to utilitarian items such as furniture, tableware and home accessories. Their Belleville Chair (2014) is named for the vibrant neighborhood where their firm is located, a bustling Parisian quarter with bistros, bars and cafés frequented by international clientele. Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Dining Armchair
Design Within Reach 1966 Collection Dining Armchair

Craving furniture that could stand up to the salty environment of her seaside home in Florida, Florence Knoll called on Richard Schultz to create a decent set of outdoor furniture made out of materials that wont rust or corrode. That was in 1962, and Schultz spent the next four years designing his refined 1966 Collection, originally known as the Knoll Leisure Collection. At a time when most outdoor furniture was stamped out of metal with backrests shaped like bouquets of flowers, the 1966 Collection brought the clean lines and balanced proportions of indoor modern furniture to outdoor living. In the years since its debut, the collection has been re-engineered to take advantage of modern materials like Teflon® thread. In creating the 1966 Collection, Schultz satisfied Florence Knolls request for outdoor furniture that lasts, and many of the sets purchased 50 years ago are still being enjoyed today. The 1966 Collection is included in the permanent collection at MoMA. This is the authentic 1966 Dining Armchair by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Fitted cover sold separately. Materials: Cast and extruded aluminum frame; weather-resistant polyester powder-coated finish; woven vinyl-coated polyester mesh; pure vinyl straps; Teflon thread; stainless steel supports and connectors; clear plastic floor glides. Design Within Reach Raction Potique T-Tray

Spanish designer Jaime Hayon immersed himself as a teenager in both skateboard culture and graffiti art, which lie at the core of the bold and whimsical forms that he creates today. In 1997, after studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica, a research center in Treviso, Italy, where he soon became the head of design. Hayon struck out on his own in 2003, first devising collections of ceramics and furniture, then delving into interior design. His work is featured in several museums and has received accolades from the likes of Time and Wallpaper . Réaction Poétique commemorates the 50-year anniversary of Le Corbusiers death, inspired by the organic shapes of his architecture and LEsprit Nouveau artwork. I wanted to create useful objects for the modern home such as trays and side tables, but with sculptural elements interplaying forms, light and shadow, says Hayon. These pieces can be used for everything from passing hors doeuvres to displaying knickknacks. Each is carved and finished by hand and includes a card of authenticity. Made in Italy.
