Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple form, the Era Chair (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the back of the chair and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet – who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making – eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. The resulting chair is graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong – the latter of which has been continually proven in cafes and restaurants all over the globe. Made in the Czech Republic by a company that has been in continuous operation for more than a century. This contract-quality chair is suitable for commercial and residential use. Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs

The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men – for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive Chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter, and the contoured plywood seat is supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Backed by a five-year manufacturers warranty. Made in U.S.A. Design Within Reach Nakashima Straight-Backed Chair Design Within Reach Nakashima Straight-Backed Chair

Presenting a very special re-introduction: the Nakashima Straight-Backed Chair (1946), designed by George Nakashima for Knoll. Nakashima was an MIT-trained architect who was known to describe himself as Japanese Shaker. This was meant to express his belief that his designs should be treated as everyday functional objects, not precious possessions. Such thinking was consistent with the Mingei Movement that influenced Nakashima and his work. The Movement sought to rescue common crafts that had been discarded as a result of industrial revolution, like traditional Japanese joinery and the use of natural materials. Whats remarkable about his work for Knoll is that Nakashima was able to maintain the sculptural lines and fine craftsmanship of his Straight-Backed Chair even at the mass production level. This reconciliation of art and industry, and the contradictions that accompanied it, continued to fascinate Nakashima throughout his career. His work has been presented at many exhibitions worldwide, including the retrospective Full Circle at the American Craft Museum in New York. This chair is manufactured by Knoll. Made in U.S.A. Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Armchair - Wood Legs Design Within Reach Saarinen Executive Armchair - Wood Legs

Materials: Molded reinforced polyurethane shell; contoured plywood seat; solid steam-bent oak legs. FABRIC 1: Knoll Classic Bouclé, 52% wool, 48% nylon. FABRIC 2: Knoll Textiles Rivington, 38% wool, 28% cotton, 28% acrylic, 6% polyester. LEATHER: Spinneybeck Volo leather upholstery. Eero Saarinen called himself a form giver, and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his WombTM Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home. Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid.
