Design Within Reach Maharam Pillow in Repeat Classic Houndstooth

DWR Exclusive Material research primarily determines all of Jongerius designs. Her vast portfolio includes single pieces exhibited at galleries, mass-produced products sold at retail stores, design of airliner interiors and even the redesign of the North Delegates Lounge at the UN Headquarters in New York. Jongerius was just beginning her career when she was approached by Maharam and invited to work on a project for their 100th anniversary. Maharam now produces 29 different Jongerius textiles, many of which are in the permanent collections at the Art Institute Chicago, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum and MoMA. Repeat Classic Houndstooth (2002) plays on the concept of random order as fabric meets furniture with a predictable yet uncertain result. Design Within Reach Axis Pillow
Design Within Reach Axis Pillow

DWR Exclusive After graduating from the Royal College of Art and Design in London, textile designer Tamasyn Gambell headed to Paris, where she mastered her trade at couture houses such as Sonia Rykiel and Louis Vuitton. In 2007 she relocated to Stockholm to explore the opposite end of the spectrum as a print designer for H&M, launching her own company a year later. A true contemporary modernist, Gambell believes that good design and green design go hand in hand. I use the most eco-friendly materials and processes, she says, as I believe that designers have a responsibility to the environment and that being green does not have to compromise style or quality. In creating her Axis Pillow (2012), Gambell was inspired by the colors and energy of tribal textiles and the shapes and simplicity of iconic Bauhaus design. The result is a collection of throw pillows that defy the whims of fashion. The fabric is sourced from a mill in Italy and printed by Gambell and her team in South London. Made in the U.K. Pillows exhibit variances from one to the next since theyre individually cut from fabric with a repeating pattern, making each one unique. Materials: Irish linen; water-based pigments; invisible zipper; 90% goose feather, 10% goose down filling; 230 cotton ticking lining. Measurements:Small: L 18" W 13" Medium: L 20" W 20"

Design Within Reach Maharam Pillow in Arabesque
Design Within Reach Maharam Pillow in Arabesque

DWR Exclusive Trained as an architect but proficient in nearly all design disciplines, Alexander Girard had a profound impact on 20th-century visual culture. Shortly after being introduced to Herman Miller by Charles Eames and George Nelson in 1952, Girard became the textile divisions founding director of design, a position he held for the next 21 years. He designed over 300 textiles during his tenure there, all the while benefiting from the freedom to explore wildly different approaches to fabric production, yarn content, pattern, texture, color and mood. Staggering not only in its sheer volume but also in its stunning creativity, his body of work remains relevant to this day. Maharam has reissued a total of 20 Girard patterns to date as part of its Textiles of the 20th CenturyTM series, dedicated to faithfully reissuing the textiles of great multidisciplinary designers of the past – from Anni Albers and Charles and Ray Eames to Josef Hoffmann, Verner Panton and Gio Ponti. Girard conceived Arabesque (1954) in just his third year at Herman Miller. Its characterized by offset weft striping and ribbons of geometric motifs, with a basket weave that adds rustic texture to the background and a dense weft satin that gives the details an embroidered feel. Fabric made in U.S.A. Materials: Fabric pillowcase (44% cotton, 28% nylon, 28% wool); cotton ticking; feather filling. Measurements:L 21" W 11" L 17" W 17" L 26" W 18"
