Design Within Reach Eames Molded Wood Counter Stool, DWHCX

The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests, said Charles Eames, and its in that spirit that the Eames Molded Shell Collection (1950/2015) was expanded to include a counter stool and barstool. This collection was originally designed on the principle of adaptability, offering a breadth of options to serve a wide variety of applications and environments. Over time, its composition evolved, making it a fascinating study of our shifting manufacturing capabilities and ways of living. Nearly seven decades have passed since the Eames Molded Shell Collection was first designed, yet it continues to be relevant today. Can you imagine a more thoughtful host? This is an authentic Eames Stool by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A. DWHCX stands for dining, wood, high, counter, X-base, which is a bit abstract since you have to turn over the stool to see how its base forms an X. Materials: Palisander, walnut, white ash or ebony-stained ash veneer seat; black or white powder-coated or chrome-plated steel base; leveling floor glides. Design Within Reach Su Counter Stool
Design Within Reach Su Counter Stool

Founded by architect Oki Sato in 2002, Nendo is a Tokyo-based multidisciplinary studio that specializes in architecture, interiors, furniture, industrial products and graphic design. Known for his prolific and diverse work, Sato was named designer of the year in 2012 by both Wallpaper and Elle Décor magazines. During an interview with The Wall Street Journal , he shed some light on the studio itself: Nendo means playdough, almost – its about mixing different colors and creating different shapes. Its the flexibility of designing things. That approach was certainly key to the creation of the Su Counter Stool (2014), as was the Japanese concept of su , which translates to simple, plain and minimal. An engaging mix of shapes and materials, the Su Stool celebrates the eco-friendly design, deft engineering and strength for which all Emeco products are known. The 1006 Navy Chair has always been the chair, and its been an honor to work with Emeco to create Su, Sato says. For us, it is the stool. The seat does not swivel. Made in U.S.A. Seat made of recycled high-density polyethylene (75% post-consumer, 25% post-industrial) or solid oak reclaimed from American structures and carved by Amish craftspeople in Pennsylvania. Base constructed of 80% recycled aluminum (40% post-consumer, 40% post-industrial), which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum. Materials: Recycled polyethylene or reclaimed oak seat; aluminum base with anodized brushed finish; stainless steel foot caps with clear plastic glides. Measurements:H 24" W 19" D 17.75"

Design Within Reach Tractor Counter Stool

Craig Bassam was working on a project in Switzerland when he found a tractor seat on the side of the road. He was impressed by how the seat allowed him to sit in an upright, ergonomic position without the aid of a chair back, but unlike the metal seat that he found, he wanted to create this type of seat in wood. Bassams Tractor Stool (2000/2001) is carved out of a massive block of sustainably sourced ash or walnut, the quality of which is in the top 10% of premium woods. No stains are ever used, and because of the natural variations in wood, every Tractor Stool is unique. Each is finished by hand with a wipe-on oil and sealer product; by not using spray booths, BassamFellows maintains a healthy work environment for its artisans. Scratches that come with normal use of this stool will create a warm, inviting patina over time. Tractor is used in diverse settings worldwide, from the W Hotel in South Beach to the Herman Miller® showroom in New York to Le Royal Monceau hotel in Paris. Design Within Reach Bertoia Counter Stool
Design Within Reach Bertoia Counter Stool

With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art, when Bertoia met Florence Knoll (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband, Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance thats supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture, said Bertoia. Space passes through them. After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. This is the authentic Bertoia Stool produced by Knoll. The Knoll logo is stamped into its base. Made in Italy. The White and Black frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. The Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections. Measurements:H 39.5" W 22" D 22" Seat H 27.5"

Eero Saarinen called himself a “form giver,” and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his Womb Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. “The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” said Saarinen. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. DWR Exclusive Omar De Biaggio got his start by cold-calling furniture stores and wholesale dealers he found listed in Elle Décor magazine. A handful agreed to see his prototypes, so he jumped in his car and drove to meeting after meeting. After his career-changing road trip, De Biaggio returned home with commissions for 300 chairs. When you show something to passion-driven people who understand why you designed it, and it finds a place in their hearts, then your product will be successful, says the designer. Design Within Reach Series 7TM Counter Stool

The Series 7 Chair (1955) debuted in Sweden at the Helsingborg exhibition of 1955, or H55. One of the most copied chairs of the modern era, it features an ideal shape for the human form, with a back that offers just the right amount of give to keep your upper body comfortable and a waterfall seat that supports your legs without pressing into them. Arne Jacobsen, instilled with a love of materials, shaped the core of Danish design identity with this chair by forming it from one piece of plywood that he cleverly narrowed in the middle to accommodate three different bends. Once painstakingly made by hand, Series 7 is now crafted using automation methods borrowed from the German car industry and monitored by a team that ensures every single chair is perfect. The stools were added to the collection in 2015. Suitable for commercial use. Stacks six high. This is the authentic Series 7 Counter Stool by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Denmark. Christophe Pillet brings simplicity, sensuality and a light touch to his internationally renowned work with Lacoste, Catherine Malandrino, Cappellini, Emu, Renault and others. This French designer was trained in Italy, where he assisted Martine Bedin and Michele De Lucchi, and returned to France in 2003 to launch his own agency. His collaboration with Emeco began in 2009 when Pillet was commissioned by Hotel Sezz to do the interiors for its new St. Tropez location. A contemporary interpretation of beauty, timelessness and industrial heritage, the Sezz Counter Stool (2010) is sleek and inviting. The look is very subtle, says Pillet, but it holds unbelievable quality. You dont see the welding, the recycled aluminum, the indestructibleness – they are all real but invisible values, the hidden territory of a luxury product. The Sezzs engineering challenge was to build the perfect frame to fit the comfortable rounded seat. The solution is a tube design thats bent by hand to hold the deep seat basket, and then, like all Emeco seating, is hand-welded, ground and hardened. The resulting Sezz Collection, built to last lifetimes, combines Emecos traditional heritage with a very modern design. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Anodized aluminum; clear Lexan polycarbonate glides. Imagine, says Philippe Starck, a guy who takes a humble broom and starts to clean the workshop, and with this dust he makes new magic. The dust Starck refers to is reclaimed polypropylene and wood fiber, two of the materials used to create his Broom Collection (2012). Starck first drew the shape of his reclaimed, repurposed and recyclable Broom in 2003, but it took a decade to design it in these eco-friendly materials. It made its debut at the 2012 Salone del Mobile in Milan, and as soon as we saw it, we knew it belonged in our assortment. Durable, comfortable, colorful and unique in how it makes use of normally discarded materials, Broom is a smart solution that literally sweeps up waste from the industrial manufacturing cycle. All colors suitable for outdoor use except orange. This is the authentic Broom Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. Made of 90% industrial waste. Broom is a patented design by Philippe Starck for Emeco. It is illegal for another company to clone this stool. Materials: 75% reclaimed polypropylene; 15% reclaimed wood fiber; 10% glass fiber. Measurements:H 33.25" W 17" D 16.25" Seat H 24"

Presenting the Nine-0 Collection by Ettore Sottsass. The designer, who helped found the Memphis Group and created the iconic Olivetti Valentine typewriter, finished his seating collection for Emeco shortly before his death on December 31, 2007. The name “Nine-0” refers to the age Sottsass was when he designed the collection, which is handcrafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step process that Emeco first developed for its 1006 Navy® Chair. Sottsass was one of the first designers to use the 1006 Navy in residential applications, and the Nine-0 is his reinterpretation of that classic chair. The Nine-0, like all Emeco seating, is crafted of 80% recycled aluminum and has an estimated lifespan of 150 years. Stacks up to six high. Nine-0 chairs and stools contribute to LEED credit #4.2 Recycled Content (and credit #5.1 if shipped within 500 miles of Hanover, Pennsylvania). Backed by a seven-year manufacturer’s warranty. Made in U.S.A. Materials: Brushed anodized aluminum (80% recycled); polyurethane seat and back. Measurements:H 31.5" W 20.25" D 22.25" Seat H 23.75"

Design Within Reach 20-06 Counter Stool Upholstered

The upholstered 20-06 Counter Stool (2006) shares the same tensile strength as other aluminum Emeco seating – three times that of steel. Designed to stand alone or pull up to any counter height surface, it is the result of a collaboration between manufacturer Emeco and London architects Foster & Partners, both experts in aluminum fabrication. The Counter Stool features hand-welded construction that follows the same 77-step process developed in 1944 when Emeco first created its 1006 Navy Chair for use on WWII submarines. With its indestructible anodized finish and attached vinyl seat pad, it is suitable for light outdoor use. Like its 20-06 counterparts, the Counter Stool has an estimated 150-year lifespan – longevity that means less impact on the earths resources. DFHCX stands for dining, fiberglass, high, counter stool, X-base, which is a bit abstract, since you have to turn over the stool to see how its base forms an X. Made of 98% recyclable materials and covered by Herman Millers Take Back Program for environmentally sound recycling (should you ever wish to part with it). Materials: Fiberglass-reinforced plastic seat; black or white powder-coated or chrome-plated steel base; leveling floor glides; Hopsak upholstery (100% recycled polyester). Legend has it that Emeco founder Wilton Dinges tested the strength of a 1006 Navy Chair (1944) by tossing it out a sixth-story window. The people on the sidewalk below were a bit surprised, but the chair was fine, with the exception of a few scratches. Today, Emeco still uses the same 77-step process that Dinges perfected seven decades ago to satisfy the militarys need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for destroyers and submarines. The companys proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a chair so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Emecos all-aluminum chairs and stools come with a lifetime guarantee, and generations from now, when your great-great-grandchildren finally manage to wear out a chair thats tested to withstand 1,700 pounds of weight (big kids), the aluminum can be fully recycled and made into something else. Stainless steel foot caps are covered with clear plastic glides to prevent floor scratches and carpet snags. Stool with brushed finish is suitable for outdoor use. This is the authentic 1006 Navy Stool by Emeco. Made in U.S.A. The Navy Chair design constitutes the proprietary Trade Dress of Emeco, making it illegal for another company to clone this stool. Made from 80% recycled aluminum (40% post-consumer, 40% post-industrial), which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum. In continuous production since 1944. Materials: Anodized aluminum; stainless steel foot caps with clear plastic glides. Measurements:H 37" W 20.75" D 19.5" Seat H 24" Arm H 33.5"

Design Within Reach Jamaica Counter Stool
Design Within Reach Jamaica Counter Stool

Spanish designer Pepe Cortés spent years designing furniture for restaurants and studying how items are used in contract settings. Stools in particular tend to be moved by patrons in these environments, and the same can be said for how stools are used in homes. With this in mind, he originally created his Jamaica Stool (1991) for the Big Ben Discotheque. Sturdy and lightweight, Jamaica is easy to lift and move, making it a versatile solution for hospitality, office break rooms and residential applications. Made with a 360-degree swivel, the hand-polished aluminum seat is especially well suited to high-usage areas, and its contoured shape is not only comfortable but attractive as well, with its high-polish surface reflecting a mix of light and shadow. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame provides sturdy support. Manufactured by Amat-3 for Knoll® according to the exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Spain. Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified® for its use of low-emitting products and 100% recyclable castors. The underside is stamped with the Amat-3 logo. Not recommended for outdoor use. Awards include the Association of Art Directors, Graphic Designers, Illustrators and Photographers from the Development of Decorative Arts (1991) and Design-Auswahl Stuttgart (1994). Design Within Reach Bertoia Counter Stool with Seat Pad
Design Within Reach Bertoia Counter Stool with Seat Pad

Stool made in Italy; seat pad made in U.S.A. The White and Black frames can be used outdoors with limited exposure to the elements. The Chrome frame is not for outdoor use. Seat pad is secured to chair with metal snaps. Materials: Welded steel rods; polished chrome finish with chrome connections or bonded Rilsan® finish with stainless steel connections; vinyl seat pad (65% polyester; 35% rayon). Measurements:H 39.5" W 22" D 22" Seat H 27.5"

Design Within Reach Emeco Stool Seat Pad
Design Within Reach Emeco Stool Seat Pad

After updating the iconic 1006 seat by Emeco for the Hudson Hotel in New York City, Philippe Starck took on the Emeco Counter and Barstools, stripping the classics of their back and arms and giving them an irresistably slender profile. Simple, elegant and commodious for bodies of all sizes, the stools contain up to 80% recycled aluminum and are handcrafted to be stronger than steel using the same proprietary 77-step process as the classic 1006 Navy Collection. First designed as prototypes for the Mies van der Rohe retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 2001, the Bar and Counter Stools are solutions that the museum thought Mies van der Rohe himself might choose today. Made available to the public in 2002 and equipped with optional vinyl seat pads, they have a cool neutrality right for any environment, artfully blending contemporary crispness with the contours of '50s modernism. The optional Seat Pad, in black, is made of vinyl and is easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Materials: Vinyl. Measurements:W 14" D 14" H 0.25"
