Design Within Reach Eames House Bird
Design Within Reach Eames House Bird

The Eames House Bird rose to stardom in the 1950s when Charles and Ray Eames pulled it from their own living room and positioned it with a group of Eames® DKR chairs for a poster. Also appearing in several of the Eameses photographs, the masterfully simplistic black bird (circa 1910) with its tapered beak and sleek tail was evidently one of their most prized objects of Appalachian folk art. In cooperation with the Eames family, Vitra used 3-D scans of the original to create the solid alder wood reproduction. Made in Germany. This item ships directly from Vitra via Standard Service. Delivery to Canada currently unavailable. Materials: Solid alder; black lacquer finish; steel wire. Measurements:H 11" W 3.5" D 10.75"

Design Within Reach Girard Environmental Enrichment Panel
Design Within Reach Girard Environmental Enrichment Panel

Art is only art when it is synonymous with living, said Alexander Girard, the director of design for Herman Millers textile division from 1952 to 1973. Toward the end of his tenure at the Michigan-based company, Girard was asked to add an element of aesthetic functionalism to Herman Millers very first open-plan office system, called Action Office. He responded with more than 40 images for the Environmental Enrichment Panel (1972) project. Ranging from abstract designs to figurative pictograms, these lively, colorful and fun panels bring personality and warmth – and a bit of Girard wit – into any environment. Each includes preattached mounting brackets for easy hanging (mounting screws not included). This is an authentic Environmental Enrichment Panel by Herman Miller. Materials: Silkscreen on 100% linen; MDF mounting panel with spacer frame. Measurements:H 65" W 23" D 1.5"

Design Within Reach Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames Plywood Elephant
Design Within Reach Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames Plywood Elephant

Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Eames Plywood Elephant (1945) is among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses and one of the most difficult to produce. In the early 1940s, they successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. To render the Elephant, tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. It was so complicated that the full-size Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and 1946. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames family. Vitra Design Museum has reproduced the Plywood Elephant at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and materials, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Made in Poland. Materials: Molded natural maple plywood. Measurements:H 5" W 2.75" D 2.75"

Design Within Reach Vitra Miniatures Collection: Castiglioni Mezzadro

Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and materials, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. On the occasion of the XIth Milan Triennial in 1957, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni presented their first prototype for the Mezzadro. The stool went on show in its current form that same year in an interior setting displayed at the Colori e forme nella casa doggi exhibition in the Villa Olmo in Como. The designers used a common tractor seat for the springy metal seat, fastening it with a wing nut to the spring-based arched steel strip utilized in tractors to absorb the shock of uneven ground. They enhanced the stability of the cantilever structure by a wooden cross-strut that resembled the rungs of a wooden ladder. Each of these parts clearly embodies its task as a part of a functional whole. And what strikes the eye is the recourse to an artistic method exemplified by Marcel Duchamp's found objects or Pablo Picasso's assemblages. The Castiglionis considered a design successful only once they had managed to eliminate all the unnecessary components and an optimal formal expression had been found for this concentration on the essential. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Materials: Chrome-plated and lacquered steel; beech wood. Measurements:H 3.5" W 3.25" D 3.5"

Design Within Reach Eames Limited-Edition Prints
Design Within Reach Eames Limited-Edition Prints

Charles and Ray moved into their Pacific Palisades home, aka Case Study House No. 8, on Christmas Eve in 1949. For the rest of their lives, this was where they lived, worked and played, and today the interior remains very much as they left it. The Eames Foundation is taking serious efforts to conserve the property, and their work is very Eames-ish in its approach and brilliance. Next to a large tree, a small one grows, ready to take its place when the time comes. Monitoring devices – installed by Gettys architectural conservator, the same person who developed climate control for King Tuts tomb – are tracking the environmental conditions affecting the house. Perhaps most Eames-ish of all is the name: 250 Year Project. Rather than waiting for the house to be in crisis, the foundation is planning for future needs now. These tax-deductible limited-edition prints are original works inspired by Eames quotes or objects from the house itself. All proceeds will help support the conservation projects of the Eames Foundation. Each print is individually numbered. Made in U.S.A. Spiral: With their passion for the deep resonances between art and science, its no surprise that the beautiful spiral of a nautilus would command the attention of Charles and Ray. This image is recreated from one found in the Giant House of Cards designed by the Eameses in 1953, a set of which still exists inside the Eames House. Details: This classic Eames quote from the film Eames Contract Storage reflects a philosophy embedded in every example of work from the Eameses. It also exemplifies the Powers of Ten thinking they brought to so many of their projects. At first a bit terse, its actually an insightful reminder of what makes timeless design. Tops: At the end of watching their first film, Blacktop , on the TV show Stars of Jazz , Charles and Ray were startled when the host announced the show would air a new film from them next week. Rather than expressing indignation, in six days they shot and edited a three-minute film now known as Tops from the Stars of Jazz . Like many others, it was shot at the Eames House. The Need: Asked on film, To whom does design address itself? To the greatest number (the masses)? The specialists? The enlightened amateur? A privileged social class? Charles replied simply, To the need. One of the most concise expressions of design philosophy, the full quote serves as a perfect companion to those contemplating guiding principles. Materials: Offset-press print on premium paper. Measurements:H 12" W 18"

Design Within Reach Ascalon Menorah
Design Within Reach Ascalon Menorah

DWR Exclusive Upon finishing his masters in industrial design at Pratt in 2005, Brad Ascalon was named one of the worlds Ten Most Wanted emerging designers by Wallpaper . He grew up immersed in art and design, and his chosen career is a nod to his father and grandfather, the latter of whom founded a metal arts manufacturing company in Israel in the late 1930s. He designed hundreds of decorative objects, says Ascalon, including dozens of menorahs. In fact, one piece he designed is in the permanent collection at the Jewish Museum. Ascalons father also designs menorahs, but not for tabletops. Rather, he produces one-of-a-kind, large-scale permanent art installations for synagogues around North America. When Ascalon approached us to see if wed be interested in producing his first menorah design, we enthusiastically agreed. The result is an elegant design crafted out of Carrara marble. Stylistically, the design finds itself in an interesting niche, says Ascalon, visually modern with an unexplainable classic undertone. The eight facets correspond to the eight days of Chanukah, and the left and right diagonals create an 18-degree angle. In Judaism, 18 is a very important number symbolizing chai , or life. A kosher design, the Ascalon Menorah (2011) accommodates eight candles arranged in a line on one level and a ninth, the shamash (used to light the others), on another. Available with or without 45 hand-dipped 6-inch white candles, which burn clean and bright for more than an hour each. Made in China. Part of the permanent collection at the National Museum of American Jewish History. Handpicked by Oprah for her 2011 Favorite Things issue of O, The Oprah Magazine . Materials: Solid white Carrara marble; wax candles with cotton strings. Measurements:H 1.75" W 2.5" D 11.5"

Each handmade Vitra miniature is a classic in the history of furniture design reduced in size at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and materials, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Charles and Ray Eames received a commission to design the interiors of three lobbies in the new Time & Life Building at Rockefeller Center in New York City. In addition to outfitting these spaces, this major project encompassed the development of the comfortably upholstered Lobby Chairs and a group of stools made out of solid walnut. Inspired by an African stool that stood in the living room of the Eames House, the lathe-turned Eames Stools (1960), which were also conceived by Ray to be used as small occasional tables, have distinctive individual profiles. Each Vitra miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Materials: Solid walnut; varnish. Measurements:H 2.5" W 2.25" D 2.25"
