Riedel is renowned for quality and purpose. With over 250 years of experience in glassmaking, Riedel revolutionized simple glassware when Claus J. Riedel, 9th generation, designed the first collection of varietal-specific stemware in the 1970s.
Working with experienced tasters and winemakers, Claus Riedel realised that wine enjoyed from certain shaped glasses showed more depth and better balance than when served in others. He laid the groundwork for stemware that was purposefully designed as well as beautiful, and made according to the Bauhaus design principle: form follows function. His masterpiece “Sommeliers” set the precedent for a range of series, designed specifically to enhance the wine’s harmony.

Claus Riedel’s discovery changed the relationship glassware has to wine and, since then, each Riedel in the family’s history has contributed to the company’s success and driven the brand forward. Georg J. Riedel redeveloped production of his father’s glassware range using machine methods, lowering the price point significantly and ensuring the products were available to the wider consumer. His son Maximilian introduced the stemless O series for casual wine consumption, and perfected the art of decanter designs that are both theatrical and purposeful.
